The Archives and Special Collections recently received buttons (or pins) related to this event. For the full story of how Southern State College became the University of South Dakota/Springfield, and then a state minimum-security prison, consult the William J. Janklow papers at the Archives and Special Collections and/or read “Closing Time: A Twenty-Five-Year Retrospective on the Life and Death of the University of South Dakota at Springfield” by Marshall Damgaard in the South Dakota History volume 39 number 3, (fall 2009): 189-267. Damgaard stated in his history that “On the Move” “was the slogan USD/S adopted to signify its new emphasis on technical education in the 1970s.”
